Meet ISU President, Dr. Kinzy
On episode #52 of the Building BN podcast, BNEDC CEO Patrick Hoban and Community Marketing Manager, Whitney Chesher sit down to speak with Illinois State University President, Dr. Terri Goss Kinzy. Dr. Kinzy’s biography, posted on the ISU website, details her vast academic endeavors and numerous awards and achievements.
Dr. Kinzy graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry, magna cum laude, from The University of Akron, a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University and did postdoctoral training in molecular genetics at Carnegie Mellon University. She started her career at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (RWJMS) as an assistant professor in 1995 rising to professor in the Departments of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Pediatrics in 2003. Dr. Kinzy was elected to the University Master Educator Guild, selected as a Bridges to the Professoriate Faculty Mentor of the Year from the Compact for Faculty Diversity, named a Woman of the Year in Medicine for Somerset County, New Jersey, and a Crain’s Detroit Notable Woman in STEM. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and was a fellow in the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program. Her mentoring of others has been recognized with the New Jersey Association for Biomedical Research Outstanding Mentor Award and the R. Walter Schlesinger Basic Science Mentoring Award.
Dr. Kinzy is also a member of the McLean County Museum of history board and a member of the National Institutes of Health National Institute for General Medical Sciences Council. She is also a member of the Planning Committee - National Academies Workshop on Long-term COVID-19 Impact on Women in STEM. She shares a personal fun fact on the podcast: She was born across the street from the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, although she notes that her current favorite sport is volleyball, namely the ISU women’s team.
